We’ve uploaded 22 new clips from our cloud tank collection. There are two primary varieties available, those shot over black and those over chroma key blue. All clips are available for download in 4k ProRes Quicktime and 4k EXR files with an alpha channel. RAW R3D files are also available for download.
We’ve pre-keyed all the clips, so each download includes a “color” QuickTime and a separate black and white “alpha” QuickTime. In general, these shots composite easily over a dark, stormy sky; however, with a little finesse, they can be used over practically any sky. In the coming weeks, we’ll post some quick tutorials showcasing the best techniques I’ve found for compositing this type of footage.
Most of our cloud tank footage was shot in a custom-built 200-gallon water tank using filtered water and ink. The large size of the tank allowed us to capture some very realistic-looking “cloud formations,” generally, when using a smaller tank, the scale of the effect becomes noticeable rather quickly.
We used the separation layer technique (via Epsom salt) to achieve naturalistic layering and formation properties in the “clouds.” It really is a difficult and tedious procedure but well worth the effort because, in the end, it gave us usable cloud-like footage rather than simply ink poured into water.
We recently used some of these shots in the music video “Eye of the Storm” featuring Lovett. You can read more about that project and see some behind-the-scenes videos at Oddball Animation.

A: Cloud tank footage is created using specialized techniques, such as custom-built water tanks and separation layer techniques, to mimic the natural movements and formations of clouds. This results in more realistic and dynamic visuals compared to traditional cloud stock footage, which is often static or limited in its movement.
A: Yes, cloud tank footage is designed to be highly versatile and can be seamlessly integrated into various scenes and environments. The pre-keyed nature of the footage and the availability of alpha channels allow for effortless compositing over different backgrounds.
